A molded case circuit breaker can be used to provide overload and short circuit protection for cables, control panels, motors and branch circuits. In addition, the National Electrical Code (NEC) requires the following when controlling a motor: • A means of disconnecting power from the circuit • Short circuit protection for the cables • A way to start and stop the motor (typically a contactor) • Overload protection for the motor (typically an overload relay) The molded case circuit breaker can provide the means to disconnecting power and provide short circuit protection under UL 60947-4-1 type C protection. The magnetic only Motor Circuit Protector (MCP) can provide the same function under UL 60947-4-1 type D protection.
